Château de Fougères-sur-Bièvre, located in Controis-en-Sologne in the Loire Valley, is one of France’s best-preserved small fortified castles.

Originally founded in the 11th century, it was largely rebuilt between 1475 and 1483 by Pierre de Refuge, a senior financial official under King Louis XI, creating a residence that combined military appearance with domestic comfort. The château is notable for its defensive features, including a keep, moat, machicolations, watchtowers, and cannon openings, while later additions introduced Renaissance elements such as elegant windows and decorative galleries.

This blend of medieval and Renaissance styles makes it a particularly interesting example of the transition between the two periods. Unlike many Loire castles that were extensively remodeled, Fougères-sur-Bièvre has remained remarkably close to its original late 15th-century appearance. Today, it is a protected historic monument that offers visitors an authentic glimpse into noble life and castle architecture at the end of the Middle Ages.
