Verified Château de Langeais

Langeais, France, France

Château de Langeais is one of the Loire Valley’s most impressive medieval castles, combining the remains of an early fortress founded around 992 by Fulk Nerra, Count of Anjou, with a grand residence rebuilt in the 15th century under King Louis XI.

Its strategic location overlooking the Loire made it an important stronghold during the power struggles between the counts of Anjou and Blois. The château is especially famous as the site of the marriage of King Charles VIII and Anne of Brittany in 1491, a key event that helped unite Brittany with the Kingdom of France.

Architecturally, it presents the appearance of a fortified castle on the outside while offering the comfort and elegance of a royal residence within. Today, the castle is remarkably well preserved, with furnished historic rooms, medieval collections, gardens, and one of France’s oldest surviving stone keeps. It is considered one of the finest examples of late medieval architecture and offers visitors a vivid glimpse into royal life in the late Middle Ages.
