Château de Meung-sur-Loire is one of the oldest and largest castles in the Loire Valley, located in the town of Meung-sur-Loire.

Built between the 12th and 18th centuries, it served for centuries as the residence of the bishops of Orléans and combines the features of a medieval fortress with those of an elegant classical palace. Often called the “castle with two faces,” it is known for its striking contrast between a fortified medieval façade and a refined 18th-century façade overlooking the gardens.

The château played a role in major historical events, including the Hundred Years’ War, and is associated with famous figures such as Joan of Arc and the poet François Villon, who was once imprisoned there. Today, visitors can explore its grand rooms, medieval underground passages, chapel, towers, and landscaped park. As a protected historic monument within the UNESCO-listed Loire Valley cultural landscape, it remains one of the region’s most distinctive heritage sites.
