Château de Mirabat

The Château de Mirabat is a ruined medieval castle located in the Ariège département of France, spanning the communes of Seix, Oust, and Ustou.

It is one of the oldest castles in the Pyrenees, dating back to before the Middle Ages, and was likely originally built as a wooden structure on the orders of Charlemagne around the 10th century to protect against possible Spanish Moorish invasions. The castle served as a military garrison in the 12th century and strategically overlooks three valleys, offering a commanding view of the surrounding area.

Though now mostly in ruins, parts of its original stone walls remain, and the site includes a cave known as the Mirabat Cave, which historically may have served as an escape route. Perched at about 1242 meters altitude, the castle offers exceptional panoramic views of the Pyrenees mountains.
