Château de Montreuil-Bellay
Montreuil-Bellay, France, France
Château de Montreuil-Bellay is a large medieval castle in the town of Montreuil-Bellay, built on a hill overlooking the Thouet River on a site that was previously occupied during the Gallo-Roman era.
Its origins date back to the 11th century, when Foulques Nerra, Count of Anjou, established a fortress there to control important routes through the region. Over the centuries, the castle was expanded and strengthened, becoming one of the most important fortified sites in Anjou. Massive walls, numerous towers, and fortified gateways helped it withstand conflicts, including struggles between French and English rulers during the Middle Ages and the French Wars of Religion.
Today, Château de Montreuil-Bellay is one of the best-preserved castles in the Loire region, combining medieval fortifications with later Renaissance additions. Still privately owned, it is a protected historic monument and a popular visitor attraction known for its impressive architecture, historic interiors, and surrounding vineyards.
