Château de Pornic
Pornic, France
Château de Pornic is a medieval castle overlooking the harbor in Pornic, France, originally built as a wooden fortress in the 10th century by Duke Alan Wrybeard of Brittany to defend the port entrance, later rebuilt in stone by the Lords of Rais in the 12th century.
It gained notoriety as the property of Gilles de Rais, the infamous "Bluebeard," in the 15th century before confiscation by Duke John V during his trial, and changed hands through noble families until falling into ruin after the French Revolution when the Marquis de Brie-Serrant's assets were seized.
Restored in the 19th century by merchant Joseph Le Breton and architect François Bougoüin, who added arched brick windows and Italianate details inspired by Château de Clisson, it blends medieval towers and curtain walls with Renaissance revival elements while preserving its defensive seaside position. Privately owned today and generally closed to the public, the castle symbolizes Pornic's history, with limited guided tours available seasonally through the local tourist office, offering views of its crenellated silhouette against the Atlantic coast.
