Château de Saint-Aubin-du-Cormier was a major medieval fortress built in 1225 by Peter I, Duke of Brittany, to defend the northeastern frontier of Brittany and monitor the powerful neighboring lordships of Fougères and Vitré.

Its strategic position made it an important stronghold in the long rivalry between the Duchy of Brittany and the Kingdom of France. The castle played a significant role in several historic conflicts, including the War of the Breton Succession and the events leading to the Battle of Saint-Aubin-du-Cormier in 1488, a decisive defeat that contributed to the end of Brittany’s independence.

Shortly afterward, the fortress was dismantled in 1490 and abandoned. Today, only the remains of the keep and parts of the fortifications survive, but the site remains an important symbol of Breton history. The ruins offer visitors a glimpse into the region’s medieval past and the political struggles that shaped the history of Brittany.
