Château de Saint-Malo is a historic fortress located at the edge of Saint-Malo’s famous walled old town.

Construction began in 1424 under the Dukes of Brittany, who built it to protect the city’s strategically important port and to maintain control over the fiercely independent local population. Over the following centuries, additional towers and defenses were added, giving the castle its distinctive appearance. The castle played an important role in regional conflicts, including the Wars of Religion and later military campaigns.

Its fortifications were strengthened in the 17th century by the renowned military engineer Vauban, and the site later served as barracks before becoming a civic and cultural landmark. Today, the château houses Saint-Malo’s city hall and the Museum of History of Saint-Malo. With its medieval towers, commanding position overlooking the harbor, and connections to the city’s maritime past, it remains one of the most recognizable landmarks in Brittany.
