Verified Chateau de Sainte-Suzanne

Sainte-Suzanne-et-Chammes, France, France

Château de Sainte-Suzanne is a medieval fortress perched on a rocky hill above the Erve Valley in the village of Sainte-Suzanne-et-Chammes, one of France’s most picturesque historic towns.

Built in the 11th century by the Lords of Beaumont, it is best known for successfully resisting a siege by William the Conqueror from 1083 to 1086, making it one of the few fortresses he never captured. The castle has evolved over the centuries, combining medieval defensive features such as towers, ramparts, and a keep with a later residence built in the early 17th century.

Its commanding position made it an important stronghold during regional conflicts, including the Hundred Years’ War. Today, the château is a protected historic monument and home to the Centre for the Interpretation of Architecture and Heritage, where visitors can learn about the history of the castle, the surrounding region, and more than two thousand years of local heritage while enjoying panoramic views of the countryside.
