Verified Château de Sarzay

Sarzay, France, France

Château de Sarzay is a striking medieval fortress in the Berry region of central France, built mainly during the 14th and 15th centuries by the Barbançois family, who owned the estate for several centuries.

Positioned near the former frontier between French and English-controlled territories, it played a defensive role during the Hundred Years’ War. The castle is known for its imposing towers, moats, fortified chapel, and well-preserved medieval character. Unlike many French castles, it survived major conflicts including the Hundred Years’ War, the Wars of Religion, the Fronde, and the French Revolution without being destroyed.

The château also has a literary connection, having inspired George Sand’s novel Le Meunier d’Angibault. Today, it is a protected historic monument that welcomes visitors, offering an authentic glimpse into medieval architecture and life in rural France.
