Château de Vernègues is a ruined medieval castle located on a rocky hill overlooking the old village of Vernègues in Provence, southern France.
The site's origins date back to at least the 8th and 9th centuries, when it formed part of a fortified settlement that helped protect the local population. Over the centuries, the castle was expanded with towers, walls, and residential buildings, becoming the political and defensive center of the area. During the Renaissance, it gradually lost its importance as local lords moved to more comfortable residences in the nearby plain.
The castle and much of the historic village were devastated by the powerful Lambesc earthquake of 1909, leaving the ruins seen today. Now protected as a historic monument, Château de Vernègues remains an important reminder of the region’s medieval heritage and the dramatic natural disaster that reshaped the village.
