First established in the 10th and 11th centuries, it served as the stronghold of the powerful Lords of Baux and played an important role in the political and military history of medieval Provence. The castle's elevated position made it a formidable defensive site, and it was involved in numerous regional conflicts, including the Baussenque Wars and later struggles during the Middle Ages and Renaissance.

Its decline began after the fortress came under French royal control, and it was ultimately dismantled in 1633 on the orders of King Louis XIII and Cardinal Richelieu. Today, the castle remains one of Provence’s most famous historic attractions.
