Château d'Orcher
Gonfreville-l'Orcher, France, France
The Château d'Orcher is a medieval fortress from the 11th-12th centuries in Gonfreville-l'Orcher, Seine-Maritime department, Normandy, France, perched on a 100-meter cliff overlooking the Seine River estuary to guard against invasions.
Granted by Viking leader Rollon around 912 to the Auricher family—who held the hereditary marshal title of Normandy—it features a prominent square crenellated keep within a trapezoidal walled enclosure with towers, partially destroyed in 1360, seized by the English in 1415 alongside Harfleur, and restored in the 15th and 19th centuries.
Transformed into an elegant 18th-century residence with refined woodwork, an orangerie, potager, and terraced gardens by later owners like the Rochechouart family, this classified monument historique now opens its grounds to the public year-round for panoramic views.
