Château ducal de Gavray is a medieval fortress whose origins date back to the 11th century.

Perched on a rocky hill overlooking the Sienne Valley in Normandy, it occupied a strategic position that allowed the Dukes of Normandy to control and defend the southern part of the Cotentin Peninsula. The castle was strengthened by several Norman and English rulers, including Henry I and Henry II, and later became part of the French royal domain after the French conquest of Normandy in 1204.

Throughout the Middle Ages, it played an important military role and changed hands between Norman, French, Navarrese, and English forces during periods of conflict, especially the Hundred Years’ War. Today, only the ruins remain, but the site has been restored and interpreted for visitors. Walking among the remains offers a glimpse into nearly a thousand years of Norman history, along with panoramic views of Gavray-sur-Sienne and the surrounding countryside.
