Château Gaillard in Les Andelys, France, is a medieval fortress famously built by Richard the Lionheart between 1196 and 1198, showcasing cutting-edge military architecture for its time.

Perched on a high chalk cliff overlooking a sharp bend in the Seine River, it features a system of three baileys divided by dry moats and a massive keep with walls up to five meters thick. Its rounded curtain walls absorbed attacks from siege engines while providing wide-angle defensive positions through arrow slits, innovations that were groundbreaking in Europe.

The design also includes a heavily fortified gatehouse with flanking towers to protect entryways. Despite its advanced defenses, the castle was besieged and fell to Philip II of France in 1204. Later, King Henry IV ordered part of it demolished to prevent it from threatening surrounding abbeys. Today, the ruins of Château Gaillard remain a powerful symbol of medieval military ingenuity and the historic power struggles between England and France.
