Château de Tiffauges is a large medieval fortress in the Vendée region of western France, strategically positioned at the meeting point of the historic provinces of Anjou, Brittany, and Poitou.

Built between the 12th and 16th centuries, it was an important defensive stronghold overlooking the confluence of the Sèvre Nantaise and Crûme rivers. The castle is best known as the residence of Gilles de Rais, a 15th-century nobleman, military commander, and companion of Joan of Arc. Because of his notorious reputation, the site later became associated with the legend of Bluebeard and is often referred to as “Bluebeard’s Castle.”

Today, the château survives as an impressive ruin and is one of the largest medieval sites in western France. It is especially famous for its collection of working medieval siege engines, historical demonstrations, and interactive exhibits that bring the world of medieval warfare and castle life to visitors.
