Chaumont-Sur-Loire
France, France
Chaumont-sur-Loire is a commune in the Loir-et-Cher department of the Centre-Val de Loire region in France, known primarily for the Château de Chaumont, a historic castle originally built in the 10th century by Odo I, Count of Blois.
The château was constructed to guard the border between the counties of Blois and Anjou and underwent significant renovations in the late 15th and early 16th centuries by the d’Amboise family, who blended Gothic defensive elements with Renaissance architectural styles influenced by Italy.
The castle changed hands over the centuries and was famously purchased by Catherine de Medici in 1550, who later forced Diane de Poitiers, mistress of King Henry II, to exchange her luxurious Château de Chenonceau for Chaumont. The château stands on a hill overlooking the Loire River and is surrounded by beautiful gardens.
It also has a rich history of political intrigue and cultural significance, including associations with astrologers like Nostradamus during Catherine de Medici’s residence.
