Chevreuse
France, France
Chevreuse is a charming historic commune (town) in the Yvelines department in the Île-de-France region of north-central France, located in the Haute Vallée de Chevreuse about 30-40 kilometers southwest of Paris, making it an ideal day-trip destination from the capital.
The town has a thousand years of history and is named after the goats that once lived in the surrounding countryside and were used in tanning, which was the main local industry for several centuries. Chevreuse's most notable landmark is the majestic medieval Château de La Madeleine, a magnificent fortress built from the 11th century onwards that overlooks the town stretching on both sides of the Yvette river.
The village features picturesque architecture with timeworn cottages, cobbled squares, old millstone houses, and the scenic Promenade des Petits Ponts, a lovely meandering stroll along small bridges crossing the tiny Yvette river that runs through the village.
The town is situated in the Parc Naturel Régional de la Haute Vallée de Chevreuse, an area known for its natural beauty, castles, châteaux, crumbling medieval abbeys, watermills, and abundant opportunities for hiking and cycling.
