Verified Citadel of Calais

Calais, France

The Citadel of Calais in France was built in the 16th century on the site of a 13th-century medieval castle after Calais was reclaimed from English control in 1558. King François II ordered its construction to strengthen defenses against English and Spanish threats, demolishing a large neighborhood including the old castle and church to make way for the new fortress.

Designed by engineers Giacomo Castriotto and Jean Errard, the citadel features four towers and modern fortifications such as the prominent Neptune’s Gate. It withstood various sieges, including a Spanish attack in 1596, and was further reinforced in the 17th and 18th centuries, notably by military engineer Vauban. During World War II, the citadel endured heavy bombardment and a fierce German assault before falling. After the war, much of the interior was destroyed, and in the 1960s, the site was converted into sports grounds.

Despite damage, several historic gates and sections of the medieval walls survive, marking the citadel as a symbol of Calais’s turbulent history and resilient heritage.
