The Citadelle de Bonifacio is a spectacular medieval fortified town perched atop dramatic white limestone cliffs overlooking the Mediterranean Sea at the southern tip of Corsica.

Developed from the 12th century onward under Pisan and especially Genoese rule, it was built to protect an important harbor and control the strategic Strait of Bonifacio between Corsica and Sardinia. For centuries, the citadel served as a major military and trading center, with powerful walls, bastions, gates, and defensive structures guarding the town. Its unique location on cliffs rising about 60 meters above the sea made it one of the most formidable strongholds in the Mediterranean.

Today, the citadel is one of Corsica’s most iconic landmarks, known for its narrow medieval streets, Genoese heritage, historic architecture, and breathtaking views of the sea and the coast of Sardinia.
