The Citadelle de Calvi is a historic fortified complex overlooking the Mediterranean from a rocky promontory in the town of Calvi, on Corsica’s northwest coast.

Built mainly between the 13th and 17th centuries under Genoese rule, it served as a powerful defensive stronghold protecting the town and its harbor. The citadel played a central role in Corsican history, resisting numerous attacks and remaining closely associated with Genoa for centuries.

Its imposing ramparts, bastions, narrow streets, and religious buildings reflect its military and cultural importance, while its motto, Civitas Calvi semper fidelis (“Calvi, always faithful”), commemorates the town’s loyalty to Genoa. Today, the Citadelle de Calvi is one of Corsica’s most iconic landmarks. Visitors come to explore its historic streets, churches, and fortifications, as well as enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the sea, marina, and surrounding mountains.
