The Citadelle de Sisteron is a spectacular hilltop fortress overlooking the town of Sisteron and the Durance River in southeastern France.

Built and expanded over many centuries, it occupies a strategic position controlling the passage between Provence and the Alps, making it one of the region’s most important defensive strongholds. The fortress was continuously modernized from the medieval era through the 19th century, including major works during the Wars of Religion and later improvements influenced by the military engineer Vauban.

It also played a role in notable historical events, including Napoleon’s return from Elba in 1815 and World War II. Today, the citadel is one of Sisteron’s most famous landmarks and a protected historic monument. Visitors can explore its ramparts, keep, underground stairways, and exhibitions while enjoying panoramic views across the surrounding mountains and valleys.
