Combourg is a historic town in Brittany, France, known primarily for the Château de Combourg, a medieval fortress built around 1025 by the Archbishop of Dol, Guinguené, who gave it to his brother Riwallon, the first Lord of Combourg.

The castle, standing beside the tranquil Lac Tranquille, is famed as the childhood home of the French writer François-René de Chateaubriand, who described the surrounding woods as inspiring his Romantic literary style.

Architecturally, the château features four turreted buildings arranged around a central courtyard with pepper-pot roofed towers and an austere medieval design, reflecting its original defensive purpose.

 After years of abandonment, it underwent extensive restoration in the 19th century led by architect Ernest Trilhe under the influence of Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, known for restoring iconic French monuments.

Today, Combourg is a charming town that evolved from three historical centers—a parish town, a feudal settlement around the castle, and a priory area—and it attracts visitors with its rich history, well-preserved architecture, and its literary heritage rooted in Chateaubriand’s legacy.
