Cordeliers Garden
Digne-les-Bains, France, France
Cordeliers Garden (Jardin des Cordeliers), also called the Jardin botanique des Cordeliers, is a 2,800-square-meter municipal botanical garden located at Place des Cordeliers in Digne-les-Bains, Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region of France.
Acting like a green lung in the heart of the city, this garden was originally created centuries ago by monks at a 13th-century convent site and was reinvented in 1986 by gardeners, artists, and botanists within the cour d'honneur of Collège Maria Borelly. The garden began as a small conservatory of regional plants but was extended in 1996 to contain more than 350 plant species arranged in geometric groupings that include a collection of wild herbs, aromatic plants from the region and abroad, vegetables, and a sensory garden created in 2005.
The garden features four distinct plots dedicated to the relationships between humans and plants: a garden of uses evoking the companionship between plants, humans, and gods; a Mediterranean garden recounting the domestication of plants including a wild rose garden and lavender collection; a garden of words created by artist Jean Daviot; and plants including dahlias, roses, fruit trees, ornamental bushes, and a small labyrinth.
