Verified Coucy

France, France

Château de Coucy is a monumental medieval castle located in Coucy-le-Château-Auffrique, Picardy, France, built in the early 13th century by Enguerrand III, Lord of Coucy. It was famed for its massive central keep, which was the largest in Europe at about 55 meters tall and 35 meters wide, and for the castle's grand cylindrical corner towers and extensive fortifications.

The castle held a position of great power and pride for the Lords of Coucy, who famously declared themselves independent of kings and princes. It featured defensive structures arranged for depth of defense and also hosted rich interiors including a chapel with beautiful stained glass and an impressive great hall.

The castle suffered significant destruction during World War I when retreating German forces dynamited the keep and towers, an act that sparked public outrage and led to its status as a memorial to destruction. Today, the ruins remain a symbol of medieval grandeur and have been preserved as a historic monument, representing the feudal power and architectural might of its era.
