Culan
France, France
Culan is a small commune in the Cher department of the Centre-Val de Loire region in France, best known for the Château de Culan, a medieval castle dating from the 12th to the 15th centuries.
The castle is built on a rocky outcrop above the River Arnon and is one of the oldest castles still occupied today. Throughout its history, the castle experienced sieges and destruction, including by King Philip II Augustus in 1188, and saw notable owners such as Admiral Louis de Culant and Maximilien de Béthune, duc de Sully.
The castle survived turbulent periods including the Fronde and the French Revolution, after which its lands were divided and sold. The site includes extensive renovations and medieval gardens added in the late 20th century, and it hosts medieval festivals and reenactments. Culan village itself features medieval houses, a stone bridge, and a 19th-century stone viaduct, all set in quiet countryside approximately 56 kilometers south of Bourges.
