Falaise Castle
Falaise, France, France
Falaise Castle is one of Normandy’s most famous medieval fortresses and is best known as the birthplace of William the Conqueror, who went on to conquer England in 1066 and become its king.
Built on a rocky cliff overlooking the town of Falaise, the castle served as a major residence and stronghold for the Dukes of Normandy. Although William was born on the site around 1028, most of the impressive stone structures visible today were built during the 12th and 13th centuries. The castle was expanded by Norman and English rulers, later came under French control, and played an important role during the Hundred Years’ War.
Today, Falaise Castle is a restored historic monument featuring massive keeps, defensive towers, and ramparts. Visitors can explore its rich history through modern exhibitions and digital reconstructions that bring medieval life and the story of William the Conqueror to life.
