Forteresse Royale de Chinon is one of France’s most important medieval fortresses, dramatically positioned on a rocky ridge overlooking the Vienne River.

Built and expanded between the 10th and 15th centuries, it served as a residence for both English Plantagenet kings and French monarchs and played a key role in the power struggles of the Middle Ages. The fortress is famous for several major historical events. King Henry II of England died there in 1189, the Knights Templar were imprisoned there in 1308, and in 1429 Joan of Arc met the future King Charles VII at Chinon, a pivotal moment in French history during the Hundred Years’ War.

Today, the site consists of three connected castle complexes, restored royal lodgings, towers, and defensive walls. As one of the best-preserved medieval fortresses in the Loire Valley, it offers visitors a fascinating insight into royal, military, and political history, along with spectacular views of Chinon and the surrounding countryside.
