Harmas Jean-Henri Fabre
Sérignan-du-Comtat, France, France
The Harmas Jean-Henri Fabre is a museum and botanical garden located at 445 Route d'Orange in Sérignan-du-Comtat in the Vaucluse department of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, 30 kilometers from Avignon, dedicated to the renowned French entomologist and naturalist Jean-Henri Fabre (1823–1915) and his scientific work.
Founded when Fabre purchased the one-hectare estate in 1879 at age 56, the property features a traditional mas (farmhouse) and fallow land (called "harmas" in Provençal) that became his open-air laboratory where he observed the life and habits of countless insects until his death in 1915. The museum preserves Fabre's working study with an impressive collection of 1,300 objects and specimens, two letters from Charles Darwin to Fabre, and a monumental herbarium of 14,000 plants that Fabre assembled from age 18.
The estate includes a classified botanical garden labeled "Jardin Remarquable" (Remarkable Garden) and the house is designated as a "Maison des Illustres" (House of Illustrious People) and classified as a historic monument, and it was the first "house of memory" of a naturalist renovated in France. Open year-round, the Harmas is accessible Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 to 12:30 and 13:30 to 17:00, closed on Sundays, Mondays, and public holidays, with admission costing 7–10 euros for adults and a combined ticket available with the nearby Naturoptère, and annual passes ranging from 11–17 euros.
