Jardin Botanique de Bayeux
Bayeux, France, France
Jardin Botanique de Bayeux, also called Jardin Public de Bayeux, is a 2.6-hectare landscaped botanical garden and municipal park located at 53 route de Port-en-Bessin in Bayeux, Calvados, Normandy, France.
Created in 1859 by the Bühler brothers (who also designed Lyon's Parc de la Tête d'Or and Rennes' Thabor), the garden was originally a meadow bequeathed in 1851 by Charlemagne Jean-Delamare for horticultural teaching and opened to the public in 1864, making it one of the most beautiful 19th-century landscape parks in Normandy and a classified historic monument.
The park houses approximately 400 mature trees, many planted between 1859 and 1864 and still thriving today, with the most spectacular being a magnificent weeping European Beech that spans 45 meters wide and stands over 20 meters tall, designated as a natural monument in 1932 and certified a "Remarkable Tree of France" in 2000.
A discovery trail with 17 information terminals invites visitors to explore the garden's botanical richness and historical anecdotes about Bayeux at their own pace, and the park also includes a picnic area. The garden is open daily without charge, with seasonal hours from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm (November-February), 9:00 am to 7:00 pm (March and October), or 9:00 am to 8:00 pm (April-September), and remains a beloved green space where visitors can admire century-old trees alongside colorful summer bedding plants.
