Jardin Botanique de Deshaies
Deshaies, Guadeloupe, France
The Jardin Botanique de Deshaies is a 5-to-7-hectare botanical garden located in Deshaies, Guadeloupe, in the heart of the Caribbean islands, offering a peaceful walk through the surprising and diverse flora of the Antilles.
Created by renowned landscape architect Michel Gaillard on the former property of French humorist Coluche, the garden opened to the public on April 1, 2001, and features over 1,000 plant species set along 1.5 kilometers of pathways through 15 different garden areas. The garden showcases tropical flowers and plants including bougainvillea, hibiscus, roses of porcelain, and remarkable trees like the fromager (ceiba), baobab, mapou, sausage tree, breadfruit tree, double royal palm, and the unique talipot palm found only in Guadeloupe.
Beyond plants, the garden is also a wildlife park with a loriquet (lorikeet) aviary where visitors can feed the birds, a small village of parrots, Caribbean pink flamingos, playful goats, and giant koi carp in the lily pond, making it almost like a zoo. It is famously known as a filming location for the BBC's "Death in Paradise" television series, with the garden's murder-mystery villa being an iconic spot that visitors can explore.
The garden also includes a medicinal garden featuring traditional Creole "bush medicine" plants, artificial waterfalls, babbling brooks, a seaside cliff view, a snack called "le manguier," a panoramic restaurant, and a gift shop, and it is open daily from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM with gates closing at 5:30 PM, with adult admission at €15.90–€17.50 and children at €10.90–€12.00.
