Jardin botanique de Gondremer
Autrey, Vosges, France, France
The Jardin botanique de Gondremer is a private botanical garden located in a secluded valley at the Lieu-dit Jardin de Gondremer in Autrey, in the Vosges department of eastern France, within the Rambervillers forest near Rambervillers, created in 1975 on former wild, marshy land by Michel and Gisèle Madre (now owned by Elisabeth and Vincent Vaxelaire).
The 2-hectare garden is situated at the bottom of a Vosges valley with the Vosges forest as its backdrop and features approximately 3,500 to 4,000 different plants from various mountain regions around the world, arranged around several pools and a pond with small pathways winding through the natural, wild, and preserved setting.
The garden specializes in acid-loving plants (plants that thrive in "terre de bruyère" or peat soil) and boasts exceptional collections of rhododendrons (including about 1,500 specimens), azaleas, Kalmia, heathers, and Japanese maples, with approximately 1,500 rhododendrons and azaleas of species and hybrids, plus remarkable collections of oak trees, magnolias, and water lilies.
Four of its collections—Japanese maples, botanical rhododendrons, Kalmia, and bog Ericaceae—were recognized as national collections in 1994 by the French Conservatory of Specialized Plant Collections (CCVS), and the garden holds the official "Jardin Remarquable" label from the French Ministry of Culture.
