Jardin botanique de la Faculté de Pharmacie d'Angers
Angers, France, France
The Jardin botanique de la Faculté de Pharmacie d'Angers is an 8,000-square-meter (0.8-hectare) botanical garden and arboretum located at 16 Boulevard Daviers in the heart of the Doutre neighborhood in Angers, Maine-et-Loire, in the Pays de la Loire region of western France.
Created between 1888 and 1895 through the gradual transfer of the existing School of Botany collection from the Jardin des Plantes d'Angers, the garden is a century-old municipal garden managed by the Faculty of Health, Pharmacy Department of the University of Angers, and serves as a key educational tool for learning botany, biodiversity, and species conservation while constituting a tangible example of 19th-century botanical gardens.
The garden features two major sections: a systematic plant collection with approximately 2,000 taxa arranged in 32 beds following the early Bentham & Hooker classification system, plus a heated greenhouse (100 m²), and an arboretum containing about 315 tree and shrub species crossed by an artificial river where aquatic plants grow, with additional collections including tropical greenhouse plants (250 species), medicinal and useful plants (175 taxa), aromatic and spice plants (22 species), ancient vegetables, and a seed room, totaling around 2,200 species (2,700 taxa).
The garden is open to the public free of charge year-round Monday through Friday (9:00 AM–12:00 PM and 2:00 PM–4:30 PM), plus two Sundays annually during the European Rendez-vous aux jardins event in early June and European Heritage Days in late September, and guided tours can be organized on request for groups of at least ten people on the first Thursday of each month.
