Jardin botanique Henri-Gaussen
Toulouse, France, France
The Jardin botanique Henri-Gaussen is a botanical garden located in the heart of Toulouse, France, managed by Université Toulouse III–Paul Sabatier and accessed through the Muséum de Toulouse at 35 Allées Jules Guesde.
Named after the renowned phytogeographer and botanist Professor Henri Gaussen, who directed it from 1948 to 1958, the garden was renamed in his honor in 1991 and traces its origins to 1794 when naturalist Philippe Picot de Lapeyrouse created it originally for medicinal plant studies for medical students.
The garden reopened to the public in 2008 after renovation and now features a 150-meter-long ethnobotanical spiral showcasing medicinal, culinary, food, and industrial plants, plus ten greenhouses containing tropical walls, carnivorous plants, succulents, xerophiles, and tropical food plants.
It holds official recognition as a Jardin botanique de France et des pays francophones and displays approximately 2,000 to 3,500 plant species (taxons), serving as a living collection for the university alongside its 70 herbaria containing nearly 400,000 specimens. Entry is included with the Muséum de Toulouse admission ticket, and the garden is accessible via Metro Line B (Carmes or Palais de Justice stations).
