Jardin des plantes d'Angers
Angers, France, France
The Jardin des Plantes d'Angers is a 4-hectare botanical garden and English-style park located at Place Mendès France in the center of Angers, Maine-et-Loire, Pays de la Loire, France, near the convention center.
Originally situated beyond the city walls on the Saint-Samson suburb, it was Angers' first botanical garden from the early 18th century and was remodeled by landscape architect Édouard André into an English garden in 1905. The garden features centenary trees, cascades, statues, winding paths, and a small cascading stream, plus a stone chapel covered in ivy and climbing roses.
It is renowned for its seasonal flower displays including 25,000 annual and perennial plants chosen around a color theme, 20,000 biennial plants (pansies, primroses, forget-me-nots) for winter and spring, 12,000 spring bulbs (tulips, daffodils), and 1,000 autumn chrysanthemums. The park is family-friendly with playgrounds for children aged 3-8 and animals including rabbits, chickens, goats, ducks, and swans at the pond.
Originally a scientific botanical garden used by the renowned botany faculty where the botanophile society acquired hilly terrain with a stream and church from Saint Serge abbey in 1787, the garden cultivated over 2,000 plants by 1811 and expanded its collections through exchanges with botanical gardens worldwide. The garden is open daily from 8 AM to 6 PM throughout the year with free admission, though it may be exceptionally closed during strong winds over 70-90 km/h or severe weather alerts.
