Jardin des Plantes de Montpellier
Montpellier, France, France
The Jardin des Plantes de Montpellier is a historic botanical garden and arboretum in the center of Montpellier, occupying about 4.5 hectares on Boulevard Henri IV in the Hérault department of southern France.
Founded in 1593 by royal decree of King Henri IV and developed by the botanist Pierre Richer de Belleval, it is the oldest botanical garden in France and served as a model for later gardens such as the Jardin des Plantes in Paris.
Today the garden contains around 2,500–2,700 plant species, including many native Mediterranean plants, spread over landscaped areas, ponds, an arboretum, and greenhouses, and it continues to function as a scientific site attached to the University of Montpellier while also being freely open to the public as a peaceful green escape in the city.
