Jaÿsinia
Samoëns, France, France
Jaÿsinia is a 3.7-hectare alpine botanical garden in Samoëns, Haute-Savoie, France, created in 1906 by Marie-Louise Cognacq-Jaÿ (a Samoëns native and founder of Paris's La Samaritaine department store) and opened in 1909.
Located on a steep, south-facing limestone slope at 700–800 meters altitude overlooking the old village, the garden features 80 meters of vertical drop, 3 kilometers of paths, and plants about 2,500–4,500 species of mountain flora from the five continents (including rare species like Iris perrieri), totaling around 4,800–8,000 individual plants.
Since 1936, it has been scientifically managed by France's National Museum of Natural History, which runs a botanical laboratory and herbarium there for ongoing research. The garden is classified as a "Jardin Remarquable de France" and is characterized by impressive water fountains, cascading waterfalls, tree scenery, and historic features including ruins of the 12th-century Tornalta castle and a 1687 chapel.
It is open daily year-round (May 1–September 30: 8 AM–7 PM; October 1–April 30: 8 AM–4:30 PM), admission is free, and visits take approximately 1 hour 45 minutes, though the garden closes during snowfall to protect plantations and in adverse weather conditions like ice or strong winds. Guided tours can be booked in advance by phone or email, and paid botany introductions are offered by garden technicians.
