Josselin Castle is one of Brittany’s most iconic medieval castles, dramatically overlooking the Oust River in the town of Josselin.

Originally founded around 1008 by the Viscount of Porhoët, it was rebuilt several times and developed into a powerful fortress before becoming the principal residence of the influential Rohan family. The castle combines impressive military architecture with elegant Gothic and Renaissance features. Its most recognizable elements are the massive towers facing the river and the richly decorated façade added by the Rohans in the late 15th and early 16th centuries.

Although parts of the fortress were dismantled on Cardinal Richelieu’s orders in 1629, much of its grandeur survives today. Still owned by descendants of the Rohan family, Josselin Castle is both a historic monument and a private residence. Its blend of medieval fortifications, refined architecture, and picturesque setting makes it one of the most remarkable castles in France.
