La Rochepot
France, France
La Rochepot is a small commune in the Côte-d'Or department of France, renowned for its striking medieval château, Château de La Rochepot.
The castle was originally built in 1180 on the ruins of an earlier 11th-century fortress and was rebuilt in the 15th century in a neo-Gothic-Burgundian style. It is famous for its colorful glazed Burgundy tiles covering the roof and its well-preserved defensive features such as battlements, drawbridges, turrets, and spiral staircases.
The château has a rich history of ownership, including the noble Pot family who renamed it after themselves in the early 1400s, and prominent figures like Marshal Anne de Montmorency and Cardinal Jean François Paul de Gondi. It suffered partial destruction during the French Revolution but was meticulously restored in the 19th century by the family of President Sadi Carnot.
The château is surrounded by vineyards producing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, reflecting the region’s strong winemaking tradition. Although the castle was seized by the French government in 2018 due to its last owner’s legal troubles, it remains a symbol of regional history and architecture, attracting visitors for its fairy-tale appearance and panoramic views of Burgundy’s landscape.
