Le Château de la Motte, located in Joué-du-Plain in Normandy, is a historic château that evolved from an early Norman motte-and-bailey fortress dating back to the Viking and medieval periods.
Over the centuries, it was transformed into the elegant 18th and 19th century residence seen today, while still preserving traces of its fortified origins. The estate is associated with notable Norman families, including the descendants of Gabriel de Montgomery, the nobleman who accidentally killed King Henry II of France during a jousting tournament in 1559.
The château also features historic outbuildings, a former motte, moats, and a long tree-lined avenue that is among the most impressive in the region. The château is especially remembered for its role during World War II, when it secretly served as a center for the French Resistance, sheltering Allied pilots and storing weapons.
