Le Château des Ducs d’Alençon is a medieval fortress in the heart of Alençon that served as the seat of the Counts and later Dukes of Alençon.

Its origins date back to the early Middle Ages, and it played a key role in defending the southern frontier of the Duchy of Normandy against rival powers. Over the centuries, it was expanded, rebuilt, and involved in numerous conflicts linked to Norman, English, and French history. The castle is closely associated with important historical figures such as William the Conqueror and Henry I of England.

Much of the surviving structure dates from around 1400, although parts of the fortress were later damaged or demolished during periods of political upheaval. Today, visitors can admire the remaining towers, gatehouse, and sections of the medieval defenses, which stand as reminders of Alençon’s rich past. The château remains one of the city’s most significant historical landmarks and an important example of Norman military architecture.
