Le Jardin des Plantes
Le Mans, France, France
Le Jardin des Plantes, also known as the Jardin d'Horticulture, is a charming 5-hectare public botanical garden located near the city center of Le Mans in western France, designed by renowned Parisian park creator Jean-Charles Adolphe Alphand between 1867 and 1870.
The garden features two distinct sections: a French-style formal garden with a beautiful rose garden, a terraced mall planted with rows of lime trees, and a music kiosk, plus an English-style landscaped garden with winding paths that lead to a peaceful wooded pond. This historic site, owned by the City of Le Mans since 1881 and classified as a protected site since 1945, showcases a lovely collection of oak trees and remarkable trees while evoking the varied landscapes of the Sarthe region with its bucolic charm.
Visitors can enjoy plant labeling throughout the garden, see sculptures by artists Louis Derbré and Suzanne Jean, explore a renovated children's garden, and access free amenities including parking, restrooms, and a bar or tea salon, with the park open daily year-round from 9 AM (closing at 5:50 PM or 8:30 PM depending on season) and offering free admission.
