Montmort is a small commune (village) in the Saône-et-Loire department in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region of eastern France, located about 7 kilometers from Toulon-sur-Arroux and 96 kilometers from Mâcon, the department prefecture.

The village has approximately 189 inhabitants and covers an area of 31.73 square kilometers, with a very low population density of about 5 inhabitants per square kilometer, making it a quiet rural community. Its name likely comes from the Latin "mons mauri," meaning "sombre or black mountain".

Montmort is home to a Romanesque church dating from the 11th century, which is one of its notable historical landmarks. The village has a significant historical connection to Julius Caesar, who defeated the Helvetii in 58 BC at Montmort, with the battle site located in the Arroux valley near the hamlet of Armecy, a location discovered in 1864 and confirmed through archaeological excavations in 1986-1987.

The area is characterized by its countryside setting in Burgundy, with nearby hiking trails including circuits in the Chaumont wood and along ponds and rivers.
