Montrichard
France, France
Montrichard is a small medieval town in the Loir-et-Cher department of central France, located on the north bank of the Cher River about 45 km east of Tours and 32 km south of Blois.
Historically dating back to the 11th century, it was once an independent commune but since 1 January 2016 has been part of the merged municipality called Montrichard Val de Cher, formed together with the neighbouring village of Bourré. The town is known for its well-preserved medieval character, including old half-timbered and brick houses, remnants of fortifications.
A distinctive square stone keep (donjon) from the 11th–12th centuries that overlooks the town and the Cher Valley. Inside this keep are two small museums dedicated to local archaeology and to the area’s history and traditions, and visitors can climb to the top for panoramic views. During summer, Montrichard sometimes hosts medieval-themed shows that reenact parts of the town’s history.
