Montrichard Fortress & Museum is a historic site in Montrichard-Val-de-Cher centered around the ruins of a medieval castle founded in the early 11th century by Fulk III (Foulques Nerra), Count of Anjou.

Built to control an important crossing of the Cher River, the fortress was expanded in the 12th century and became a key defensive stronghold in regional power struggles. The castle endured sieges, attacks, and political changes throughout the Middle Ages, including damage by King Philip II in 1188 and an English attack during the Hundred Years’ War.

Later, its defenses were deliberately reduced on the orders of King Henri IV, leaving the impressive ruins seen today. Today, visitors can explore the fortress ruins and enjoy panoramic views over the Cher Valley. The site also includes archaeological and ethnology museums that showcase local history, prehistoric artifacts, traditional crafts, and everyday life in the region across the centuries.
