Parc du Mugel
La Ciotat, France , France
Parc du Mugel is a remarkable 12-hectare botanical garden and municipal park located in La Ciotat, Bouches-du-Rhône, on the Mediterranean coast of France between Marseille and Toulon, situated above the Calanque du Mugel.
Listed among the Remarkable Gardens of France by the French Ministry of Culture, the park features countless tropical and Mediterranean plant species thanks to its unique microclimate that protects it from the mistral wind and sea spray with the massive Bec de l'Aigle rock massif.
The lush vegetation includes a bamboo grove, cacti, aromatic plants, tropical plants, stone oaks, chestnut trees, oleanders, cork oaks, Aleppo pines, umbrella pines, and wildflowers, along with rare regional plant species to discover on walks. The park includes a belvedere at 82 meters above sea level offering panoramic views, as well as the Anse du Petit Mugel and Anse du Sec coves, picnic areas, and children's playgrounds.
Originally private property until 1987 when it was returned to the municipality of La Ciotat, the park is now maintained by the city and is open daily from 8:00 to 20:00 (April-September) or 9:00 to 18:00 (October-March), with free admission. The site sits on an ancient river delta from nearly 100 million years ago, where geological erosion created mystical rock formations like the Three Secs and Bec de l'Aigle, which once served as a landmark for sailors.
