Parthenay is a historic town in the Deux-Sèvres department of western France and is considered the capital of the Gâtine region.

With around 10,000 residents, it serves as an important administrative and cultural center and is situated on a rocky spur overlooking the Thouet River. The town is especially famous for its remarkably well-preserved medieval heritage. Its fortified walls, citadel, towers, half-timbered houses, and the iconic Saint-Jacques Gate create one of the most impressive medieval townscapes in the region.

Parthenay was an important stop on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela and grew around a powerful medieval castle. Today, visitors can explore its historic streets, churches, and castle remains, which reflect centuries of French history. The town is also known for hosting the Festival Ludique International de Parthenay (FLIP), one of Europe’s largest game festivals, which attracts visitors from across France and beyond each year.
