The Ruins of Château de Lavardin stand on a rocky hill overlooking the village of Lavardin, one of France’s designated “Most Beautiful Villages.”

The castle originated in the 11th century and grew into an important fortress of the Counts of Vendôme, occupying a strategic position above the Loir Valley. Over the centuries, the fortress was expanded and transformed, especially during the 14th and 15th centuries, when it evolved from a purely military stronghold into a more refined noble residence.

It played a role in several medieval conflicts, including a siege by Richard the Lionheart and later struggles during the French Wars of Religion. After being captured by royal forces, the castle was ordered dismantled by King Henri IV in 1591 to prevent its future military use. Today, its impressive remains, including sections of walls, towers, underground passages, and the large keep, offer visitors a striking glimpse into medieval history and panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.
