Verified Ruines du château de Montoire

Montoire-sur-le-Loir, France, France

The Ruines du Château de Montoire are the remains of a medieval fortress perched on a hill above Montoire-sur-le-Loir, where it once controlled the town, a bridge over the Loir River, and important regional routes.

The castle originated in the 11th century and was expanded over several centuries, becoming a significant stronghold in the Vendôme region. Throughout the Middle Ages, the fortress was involved in major conflicts and was captured at different times by Richard the Lionheart and King Philip Augustus. It continued to be strengthened and modified until the late medieval period.

After the Wars of Religion, King Henri IV ordered parts of the castle to be dismantled in the 1590s to prevent further military use, leaving it in ruins. Today, the remaining towers, walls, and keep stand as a protected historic monument, offering visitors impressive views over the Loir Valley and a glimpse into the region’s medieval past.
