Saissac is a small rural commune in the Aude department of southern France's Occitanie region, perched at around 467 meters on the northern foothills of the Black Mountain overlooking the Lauragais plain and rivers like the Lampy.

Home to about 900 residents called Saissacois, its history revolves around a 10th-century Cathar castle—one of the few remaining in the area—that played a key role in the 13th-century Albigensian Crusade and survived 16th-century religious wars largely intact.

The fortified medieval village features narrow stone streets, a Romanesque church, and natural riches including a Natura 2000 valley site, drawing visitors for hikes, panoramic views toward Carcassonne, and its textile heritage from mills that powered 18th-century looms.
